Nucleation studies

FPS-4000 is the most versatile dilution system commercially available for various dilution tasks. This is highlighted by the capability to use the FPS-4000 in nucleation studies. The nucleation potential of any produced gas mixture (i.e. exhaust from a combustion process) can be studied by controllably cooling the sample. The most effective and low loss method is cooling via cooled dilution. The possibility to use cooled dilution with accurately controlled dilution temperature with the FPS-4000 is realised with the use of a perforated tube as the primary dilution stage. Dilution ratio of the perforated tube can be easily adjusted, which is also critically important in nucleation studies. A custom designed flexible residence time chamber can be applied after the primary dilution to give the freshly nucleated particles time to grow. The produced particle distribution is subsequently diluted in the ejector diluter thus effectively stopping further change of the distribution and producing a stable sample to the measurement instruments.

The recommended accessories for nucleation studies are:

  • ELA-400 Residence time chamber
    • For giving the nucleated particles an accurately specified time to grow into a measurable size.

  • ELA-407 Vortex generator
    • For efficient cooling and accurately controlled dilution temperature.
